Curriculum

See also Curriculum Topic Letters

The curriculum is divided into two stages:

    • The Foundation Stage - delivered in Nursery and Reception (3yrs–5yrs)
    • Key Stage 1 (5yrs – 7yrs)

The Foundation Stage

This covers six broad areas of learning:-

  • Personal Social and Emotional development
  • Communication, language and literacy
  • Mathematical development
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world
  • Physical development
  • Creative development

All new parents are invited to attend a workshop, detailing the content of The Foundation Stage, prior to their children joining Nursery or Reception.

A workshop covering curriculum and assessment in Key stage 1 is held during the Autumn Term.

Key Stage 1 covers the following areas of learning:-

English - speaking and listening, reading and writing, taught daily through ‘The literacy hour’ and developed through other subjects.

Mathematics – children are taught about number, shape, space, measure and using and applying mathematics. School follows the National Numeracy Strategy: Framework for teaching mathematics during a daily lesson for all pupils.

Science – life processes and living things, materials and their properties and physical processes (simple ideas in physics)

History, Geography, Art and Design, Music, Physical Education, Religious Education, Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE)

Design and Technology – (D.T.)

Information and Communication Technology – (I.C.T.)

We have a suite of 15 computers where ICT skills are taught in class lessons and other subjects are delivered through ICT. Additionally each class has its own computer for further individual practise.

Through both Foundation and Key Stage 1 the curriculum is enhanced by Educational visits and invited guest performers and presenters.

Religious Education

Is given in accordance with the agreed syllabus for Wirral schools which is broadly Christian based. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from such instructions and from the daily school assemblies and, if they wish to exercise this right, they should write to the Headteacher.

Children who are withdrawn from class R.E. lessons may join another class for alternative activities. Children withdrawn from school assemblies will be provided with suitable adult supervision.

Sex & Relationships Education

Is covered in a cross curricular way, adhering to Wirral Sex and relationship Guidance document (Available for parents to view in school).

Topics about ‘Ourselves’, ‘Young animals’ and plants help the children become aware of the beginning of life, growth, personal relationships and the functions of parts of the body.

Out of School Activities

Town Lane Infants has an extensive extra curricular programme. There are classes held after school on most afternoons they have included music, soccer, art and language clubs (Italian, French & German), drama, tennis & gymnastics. See Children’s University page for details.
